About Aquarius
Aquarius Season usually begins on January 21 in Western Tropical Zodiac. This is the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere where the sun is lowest in strength, lending to Aquarius’ cool and thoughtful qualities. Being an air element, Aquarius are active in their thinking. They are innovative and their focus is ever-flowing. Aquarius is a fixed sign though, making them persistent, immovable and sometimes stubborn, especially with their intellect.
The constellation of Aquarius is the Water-Bearer. Noted back in Babylonian times, this constellation was associated with the protective god Eva, who carried an overflowing vase of water. Egyptians associated Aquarius with the flooding of the Nile, which they believed to occur when the Water-Bearer dipped his pitcher into the river. The spreading of the Nile was associated with the commencement of Spring, a time of growth after the flood of water to the region. In Greek myth, Aquarius was connected to mythological youth Ganymede, the son of Tros, the Trojan king. Ganymede was transported by Zeus to Mount Olympus to be the cupbearer of the gods.
The Water-Bearer often confuses people into thinking Aquarius is a water sign. Think of Aquarius-qualities as the movement of the water and the importance of the person carrying and moving it, not the water itself. The water is being moved from one place to another, transporting the resource and making use with it. The Water-Bearer is the important part, taking action to make this all happen.
Aquarius correlated to The Star tarot card. For me, this card means hope. This card depicts a Water-Bearer with one foot in the water that represents intuition and another foot on shore that represents staying grounded. One vessel is emptying into a mysterious pool and the other is quenching the dry soil. It’s a balance between guidance of the divine realm and material realm. It’s understanding what it takes to be alive in the world, but finding creative forces to come from the depths within us.
In classical astrology, Saturn was assigned the rulership of Aquarius. Saturn is a planet of intellect, objectivity and discipline. Saturn also rules order, tradition and structure, which Aquarians often seek to break free of. Saturn speaks to the Water-bearers' sense of duty to help society. Uranus is Aquarius’ modern ruler. It’s a more erratic planet, known for being disruptive and shifting perspective. Uranus’ influence on Aquarius is that rebellious, revolutionary side. Aquarians tend to question the status quo and have a need to progress forward.
Aquarius are visionary souls that love to spend their time thinking of how they can make things better. They are quick to engage others in this process, so they have lots of friends and acquaintances. They are typically socially conscious and philanthropic. They spend lots of energy on social institutions and how they do or don’t work. Aquarius people are great at dedicating themselves to projects and stick to their social principals.
They are conversational and social, but can interact in an observant way, making them typically good judges of character and dependable when rationality is needed. They can also hold others to a high standard and judge too harshly. Sometimes Aquarians can come off as pretentious. Sometimes they can come off as cold or distant. They might make boundaries that are too strict and end up isolating themselves.
Often, Aquarius don’t feel as if they fit into mainstream society and don't want to anyway. They have abstract thoughts and easily come up with innovative solutions to problems. They aren’t afraid to take intellectual or creative risks. They are naturally curious and love to take apart objects and personalities, to see what makes them tick. They should avoid being too nosy and gossipy. They are known for their dry wit. Sometimes, they use humor to mess with others.
Aquarians tend to be drawn to places they can deconstruct and reconstruct things; new systems of thought, social justice and awareness. The worlds of research, education, science and technology are great outlets for them.
