Roll out the red carpet, because Leo season has arrived. Leo season begins on July 22 in the middle and height of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the time of year where the Sun, Leo’s planetary ruler, is at its most potent strength, heat, and light. Leo’s archetype radiates confidence, heart-felt courage, and the celebrations of the fruits of Summer. These spirited fire signs are the kings and queens of the celestial jungle. Vivacious, theatrical, and passionate, Leos bask in the spotlight and celebrate themselves.

Leo’s element is fire. Leo’s affinity for leadership, performance, self-promotion, and courage are kindled in this element. They are warm-hearted, in love with life, trying to have a good laugh and a good time.

The Leo symbol is the Lion. This symbol goes back to Greek mythology, when it was associated with the Lion that Hercules overcame in a heroic battle. Since then, it’s been a symbol of victory, pride and courage. The constellation contains many bright stars, one of which is Regulus, which means ‘little king’. It lends some of the magic and regal connotations behind the Lion’s sign.

The Strength tarot card is associated with Leo. It depicts a lion being calmly and gently subdued by a graceful, confident character. It speaks to true inner strength and courage when we bring primal passions into balance and harmony. It signals being bold and decisive, but aware that there may be some confrontation or resistance.

In classical astrology, the Sun is the planetary ruler of Leo. The Sun has full affinity in the regal, radiant archetype. It’s able to be as proud, performative, and vital as a planetary force as it likes to be. With the Sun as the center of our solar system, it puts Leos in the center of life.

This sign is oriented toward assertive engagement with the outer world. As a fixed sign, Leo holds the qualities of being a sustainer. Those with Leo prominent in their charts are great at dedicating themselves passionately to projects and taking leadership in inspiring their team. The voice of authority, confidence, and passion for life comes forward in their mantra: I will. Their sense of purpose is all about conquering obstacles, achieving victory and rising to prominence.

Being natural-born leaders, Leo’s primary strengths are courage and confidence. Leadership is a natural strength for this sign in the sense that they can be a representative of an idea, a group philosophy, project or movement. Their leadership might not be administrative, but rather inspirational, keeping everyone connected to a message or purpose through their motivating presence. They usually find it easy to be happy, enthusiastic, and optimistic.

They have a great sense of pride and loyalty. They are ready to blaze a trail, vanquish injustice, and make a name for themselves along the way. It’s not uncommon to see them on the stage or in Hollywood since they don’t shy away from the limelight. They are talented and have a flair for the dramatic. Leos are ambitious and their strength of purpose allows them to accomplish a lot.

The story of the Lion always speaks of bravery. This is an animal fearless and impossible to challenge, hurt or destroy. Their only weaknesses are fear and aggression toward those they confront. They can get passionately fixed in their opinions or principals and proudly defend them even if they don’t believe in them anymore. Because of their great pride, they might find it difficult to admit when they’ve been wrong or hasty. Considering others points of view would be a helpful practice to balance an overly self-centered Leo.

Lions living in a cave always need to have one, nesting and finding comfort in hard times. They shouldn’t stay there for long. With their head held high, they have to face others with dignity and respect, never raising a voice, hand or weapon, bravely walking through the forest. They are known for their ambition and determination, but above all, Leos are celebrated for their bravery. Fearless wells of optimism who refuse to accept failure, Leos will find their deepest wells of courage as they grow mature.
