Capricorn Season follows the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This is a point where the sunlight is at its lowest, but the days are beginning to slowly lengthen. Capricorn’s resourcefulness makes us prepared for the hibernation of the winter months. It also makes it easier for us to work toward brighter days, no matter how far away.

In classical Astrology, Saturn was the ruler of Aquarius and Capricorn. The nocturnal home of Saturn was Capricorn, with its stern and authoritative abilities. Being disciplined, Capricorn gives the ability to stay organized and productive. These things come natural to Capricorn, as well as their sense of duty. They have a keen awareness of adversity and know that they were made to weather hard times.

Capricorn is represented by the constellation the Sea-Goat, whose myth extends back to the Bronze Age. The Babylonians called the Sea-Goat Ea, the god of water, knowledge and creation. In Greek mythology, Capricorn is associated with Pricus, the father of a race of honorable Sea-Goats. He tried to protect his children when they lost their ability to think and speak when they ventured onto dry land. Pricus tried to turn back time to avoid this loss and eventually had to surrender to his loss. He was given an immortal home in the heavens, and this lonely tale is where the melancholy of this archetype originated.

Capricorn is a cardinal sign that heralds the beginning of the winter season, and this leadership energy is at the core of Capricorn’s archetype. Earth is the heaviest, most solid element, and it represents the structure that all of nature is built on. This is similar to Capricorn’s affinity for structure and tangibility.

As the voice of responsibility, discipline and resourcefulness, Capricorn’s mantra is: I use. The Sea-Goat is here to build a legacy, invest their time into constructing and enduring, and their work may last the test of time and history. Others envision, but Capricorn takes those visions and brings them into a tangible form. Their sense of purpose helps them rise to great heights and achieve material and self mastery in life. Their leadership helps them to fulfill their need for hard work toward a collective goal.

The Tarot card associated with Capricorn is The Devil. The Goat’s magical association has become misunderstood over the years, so Capricorn has become unfairly associated with darkness and evil. The connection The Goat has to our shadow or dark side is found in the human tendency to fall into vices where we lose our freedom and become mentally or spiritually trapped. The Devil appears to remind us of those tendencies so that we can check what we’re attached to in an imbalanced way. Sometimes we think we have things under control, but need to be honest, courageous and dig deep to heal what has been neglected.

In summary, Capricorns are independent, disciplined and resourceful. They can assess a situation, make a plan and stick to it. They prefer to handle the details themselves, as they often think if you want something done right, do it yourself… Capricorns possess discipline and have determined energy. There is an echo of resilience and resourcefulness needed to survive the cold season that they are born into.

Capricorn is all about hard work. These signs are happy to put in the work, knowing that hard work will take a long time to get them to the top. Being ambitious and determined, they are also patient. They are able to set and conquer goals one step at a time. They are dedicated to their goals to the point of stubbornness. Life is a big project for them. They adapt by taking a businesslike approach to most things that they do.

Capricorns are reliable and loyal. They might even over-deliver on their promises. They take their reputation very seriously. They are rarely late and have no patience for those who don’t show up on time (Leos.. Gemini..) Capricorns like organization, schedules, to do lists… Though their tendencies to be sentimental and desire to be prepared for anything might lead to some hoarding. But everything will be displayed in alphabetical order in their specific place.

The beginning of this Capricorn Season falls during Mercury Retrograde, which means during the first half, the best thing to do is use that patience to reflect and plan. Once Mercury has turned Direct on January 1, the next two weeks can be used to slowly start implementing our new structure and goals.

This is a good time for rituals and spells that relate to making plans, establishing a budget, growth of business or career, getting organized, or increasing ambition. It’s a good time for banishing spells for debt, clearing out clutter or eliminating obstacles for advancement.
